Thank A Veteran – Why Do You Serve

Thank a VeteranWhy Do You Serve?

Happy Veterans Day, 2023

Meaning and Purpose:

  • Veterans Day: to thank and honor all those served honorably in the military, living and head – whether in wartime or in peace.
  • To acknowledge Veteran contributions to our national security, and to reinforce that those who served, not only those who died, have sacrificed and fulfilled their duty to their country.

Each Veteran took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic and to bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and to obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of those appointed over him/her…

As a Veteran, I served because I love my country and I’m honored to defend her, in any and all circumstance—to defend our Constitution, our People and all we stand for and aspire to be as Americans!

I reached out to fellow service members and asked them this simple question:

Why Do You Serve? Their responses are unedited…

“Currently I serve for the men and women that inspire to walk-in my footsteps, I serve for those that inspire to make a difference with the generation that follows: no profound reason…I serve for the few who hopeful also serve for the few and so on.”

“I served because I want to be a part of an institution that has the potential to do immense good in the world. The U.S. Army has an impact on the global stage, and I believe that the military can be used as a tool to promote peace and defend the values of justice and equality. I want to be a part of a community of public servants who take care of each other in order to provide opportunities for others.”

“I served so my nieces and nephews have freedom. I love the rights & freedoms this country provides. Those freedoms our forefathers fought & died to protect. I too will defend.”

“I served the people! The left behind! The after thought! Those that can’t defend their freedom but know what freedom is!”

“I serve because of the impact to change, influence and provide a voice and understanding to all! Not an obligation but an opportunity!”

“For me, it is important to serve as a member of the most honorable team which protects the most wonderful nation in the world.”

“I love this country and am proud to care for those who have come before me and those who are currently serving to keep us free.”

“I would say my reason for serving is threefold. First, I serve to defend our great nation and its interests. I am humbled by those American Soldiers that came before me, and I strive to live up to their honor and courage. Second, as a Soldier, leader, and Army nurse, I feel fulfilled in the meaningful work that I do to take care of others. Third, I value the opportunities to serve in diverse environments and with diverse people who share the same commitment united under our values.”

“I serve to care for others who have served and sacrificed, and to try and represent the ideals that America aspires to. Also, if not me, then who?”

“I served in the military for a combination of reasons. First and foremost, I felt a strong calling to serve my country. This sense of duty was instilled in me through a family tradition of military service, which made me proud to continue the legacy.”

“Serving in the military allowed me to merge my love for healthcare with my commitment to national service, providing a unique opportunity to care for the health and well-being of my fellow service members while upholding my sense of duty.”

“I enlisted for the college money-but hands down it is the people as to why I stayed and served for almost 30 years!”

“I serve because it gives me an opportunity to contribute to a bigger mission. As a Vet, I contribute meaningfully to society and my country. I have the opportunity to impact change and operate on a grand scale. I am given the opportunity to live selflessly.”

“I serve to be a part of something bigger than myself, to be an example of a servant leader. I serve because I believe in LDRSHIP:  Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage.”

“I love my country truly through the good the bad and the ugly…growing up without my family…my military family has helped to groom me into the strong secure woman that I am today. My foundation.”

“I serve because I hope to protect the freedom of this nation so that democracy can be experienced by nations all over the world. I serve because I want to breakdown walls of racism, discrimination, hatred, and bigotry. I serve so that the mistakes of this Nation’s past of the oppression of those that cannot protect themselves remain in the past and never resurface again!”

“I started off serving as part of family tradition. My father, grandfathers, great grandfather and uncles served. During my time in service, I found my purpose-serving Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Family Members and all that needed our assistance.”

“Because the American people needed us to, whether they knew it or not. Everything comes at a price, and I am willing to give up some of my freedoms for others to enjoy theirs.”

“Vietnam conflict was front and center at the time. Many of our soldiers were coming home badly injured so serving seemed like the right thing to do for me.”

“1st reason was to gain a marketable skill and pay for college. Then and now reason is to be a part of something bigger than myself that betters our world and does really good things for the world. And last reason is to guide and mentor those who just came for a marketable skill and pay for college, but stayed to be a part of something bigger than themselves!”

“ I serve because I love my country, I am honored to defend her, where ever and whenever needed. Service, sacrifice and commitment.”

“I didn’t choose this-it chose me. Serving and protecting others is in my blood and always has been. It is truly a privilege and honor to serve our Nation and her people.”

“To defend our rights and freedoms for those who can’t or are unable to serve.”

“I always wanted to serve. I served because I love my country and I’m honored to defend her, in any and all circumstance—to defend our Constitution, our People and all we stand for as Americans!”

“I serve because I have a deep love of our Country. America is the best place to live- and it gives me pride and true Happiness that I served to protect our way of Life and Freedom. I made the best of friends-my forever Battle Buddies that I will never have in the Civilian sector.”
